Apple Adds SpeedDate Service to the iPhone

Apple Incorporated announced that its free online speed dating service had been made available to iPhone and iPod Touch owners, who can now easily search for their soul mates or at least find someone to spend Valentine’s Day with.

The application enables access to SpeedDate members' profiles, with whom one can make contact by sending them a „wink” or a „flirt,” while it also allows people to create their own profile in case they are yet to be registered.

Nevertheless, besides also being able to e-mail members, SpeedDate users are confined to performing only these actions via the service.

After the app is installed on the iPhone, which takes only approximately one minute, it requests the user’s location and then displays a list of the singles in that area aged between 18 and 99.

Unfortunately, the users cannot perform a query based on criteria such as height, body type or hair color, the only filtering option in order to narrow the list down being age-related.

Apple's new iPhone will focus on gaming

The next upgrade to Apple's iPhone will have a strong focus on gaming, analysts and developers agree.
That's because the gaming market is an increasingly juicy segment of the mobile multimedia space — and it's one that Apple's phenomenally successful iPhone is well-positioned to dominate.

"The iPhone and iPod Touch are becoming a major new handheld gaming platform, and if you look at the App Store and look at what's doing well, that's reflecting," said Bart Decrem, CEO of Tapulous, developer of the popular Tap Tap Revenge iPhone game. "I would look forward to improvements in the device as a gaming platform both for the phone and iPod Touch."

Apple made clear its plans to seize the gaming market in November 2008 when Apple marketing executive Greg Joswiak called the iPhone and iPod Touch "the future of gameplay," posing a serious threat to dedicated gaming consoles such as the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. The reasons? A few things: The quick, electronic distribution method of games and apps via the iPhone's App Store; the accelerometer and multitouch display, which are introducing new approaches to gameplay; and the iPhone's lighter, more portable form factor compared to its rivals.

Numbers say the iPhone is indeed in a position to assault the gaming market. Analysts predict Apple is on track to sell 40 million iPhones or more per year. By way of comparison, Nintendo sold 42 million DS consoles from January 2007 to June 2008.

Even if you're a regular National Public Radio (NPR) listener, there's a chance you won't catch your favorite shows during the day. Many NPR stations offer podcasts, but if you're not keen on manually hunting for files and loading them onto a media player, you can let a program like the NPR Mobile iPhone app do the work for you.

Written in spare time by a software engineer and volunteer firefighter, the app links directly into the official NPR application programming interface (API) for NPR's normal XML-based distribution.

While not officially affiliated with NPR, the app lets you find NPR stations, listen to streaming audio live, and access podcasts of previously-broadcast episodes, wherever you happen to be. Users load the program, tap the Current Location button -- or type in a city or zip code -- and browse a list of the NPR stations in a particular area.

After you select a station, you can listen to a live stream via Wi-Fi, view a show schedule, or browse through the podcast libraries of popular shows such as These Days to find episodes you may have missed.

One nice feature is the ability to bookmark show segments, so you can listen to part of a show, bookmark a spot, and then do something else with your iPhone until you're ready to resume playback from the same point.

Application developers see iPhone as way to get noticed

Phanfare co-founder and CEO Andrew Erlichson has seen his future, and it's on the iPhone.

The Internet photo-sharing service recently informed 300,000 registered users of the new strategy, which ties in its website with a new Phanfare Photon application for Apple's (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch.

"The iPhone represents the beginning of what we believe will be a convergence between smartphones and point-and-shoot cameras," Erlichson told customers in an e-mail that also encouraged them to buy an iPhone.

Savvy software developers such as Erlichson are trying to stake a claim for early prominence in the mobile economy, where it's still a bit easier to get noticed than on the Web. The size of the market (about 1 billion phones sold annually) and the cool factor of the iPhone, makes it a desirable place to make a splash.

"The iPhone has the largest install base with the highest level of functionality," says Steven Echtman, CEO of HearPlanet, a free travel audio tour service that launched in early January. Other platforms have larger numbers of subscribers, such as Windows Mobile and BlackBerry, but users aren't as likely to add lots of new applications, he says, because Apple makes it easier via its App Store.

Apple iPhone Gets Microsoft Mobile Application

Microsoft Corp has released its Seadragon Mobile application for Apple Inc's iPhone. The Microsoft Live Labs applications is not yet available for the Windows Mobile platform. The smartphone application is Microsoft's first for the Apple iPhone.

"Seadragon Mobile brings the same smooth image browsing you get on the PC to the mobile platform," Microsoft said on its Live Labs blog.

The application fixes a problem that most mobile phones have. The ability to quickly zoom in on photos without losing clarity. In fact, zooming in on large high-resolution photos on the iPhone is slow.

Seadragon Mobile fixes all that. It lets users zoom in quickly, including an aerial map of the world, and even documents from the Library of Congress.

"Get super-close in on a map or photo, with just a few pinches or taps of your finger. Browse an entire collection of photos from a single screen," Microsoft said.

App Store Hits 500 Million Downloads

Apple just announced that there are 15,000 applications available at its App Store section of iTunes and that they have been downloaded a total of 500 million times. This is up from 10,000 apps and 300 million downloads just a month ago.

This is truly astounding progress, and very bad news for Apple’s smart-phone rivals. Already, the iPhone/App Store ecosystem is getting so huge relative to other smart-phone markets that some smart developers—Tapulous and Pandora, to name two particularly hot ones—have decided that there’s no point in adapting their apps for any other platform.

This is also the view of Jeff Holden, CEO of Pelago Inc. HTC plans 10 devices for 2009

According to the DigiTimes HTC is doing OK despite of the hard times.

"High Tech Computer (HTC) has announced revenues for the fiscal year 2008 (ended December 31, 2008) reached NT$152.56 billion (US$4.61 billion), with 28.65% on-year growth. Net income after tax was NT$28.68 billion, with a net EPS of NT$38.03 for the full year, according to the company."

You see? I told you there's nothing to worry about.

"For 2009, HTC aims for a revenue growth of 20%, according to company sources. The handheld device specialist is looking to introduce about 10 new models, consisting of Microsoft Windows Mobile and Google Android platform models, into the market this year, indicated the sources."

Television Application Coming Soon to iPhone

Sling Media has just demonstrated its latest highly anticipated iPhone application, the SlingPlayer Mobile; an application that lets users watch TV on the Apple iPhone, including local channels, local sports teams, video on demand and pay per view.

Using a standard broadband network connection, any channel consumers can watch on at home can be watched via the iPhone. Users can also control their home digital video recorder (DVR) to watch recorded shows, pause, rewind, and fast forward live TV, or queue new recordings while away from home.

The only bad news is that potential users have to wait a bit longer to get their mitts on this ap as SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone is just now being submitted to Apple for testing and should be approved later in Q1. The price has not yet been established.
